Paradise to yourself?

The area between Denang and Hoi An seems to have been hit quite hard by Covid. Obviously large investment projects have halted which means the infrastructure isnt yet what its building up to be. However, that meant we had the whole glorious beach to ourselves for much if the time. Looks exactly like in the tropical pictures. Shallow waters and lifeguards meant the kids could enjoy the ocean and parents could truelly relax.

Italian the Vietnamese way

I think this place wants to be “international”. Most of its menu is Italian dishes and in the English language. The menu has starters, antipasti, main courses, etc. My partner and I each ordered a starter and a main course. However, my starter and main course were served first - and at the same time. Only when I had finished, did they serve my partner’s starter and main course - again they came together. Along the way we tried to make the staff aware that we wanted each our starter at the same time, but although the staff speak kind of English, they were totally oblivious to the fact that Italian cuisine is not served the same way as a Vietnamese family dinner.

Saturday night's alright!

I had dropped by the Vanessa Beach Club during the day quite a few month's ago, and it was dead. So when I drove past this last weekend they were advertising the Venessa Beach Club Bikini Party, starting at 8.30pm. So after watching the rugby, with nothing else to do, I thought why not! I drove down the narrow driveway, and was able to park comfortably. Getting through the crowd at the entrance though was another issue. There was a large Korean tour bus blocking the way, with about 60 people hanging around wondering how to get in. It was pretty simple, approach the hostess, part with VND100K, get a paper bracelet for security purposes, that also entitled you to a free drink. I found a table near the pool and the Bikini stage, and was immediately deafened by the blaring speakers. All modern dance music, augmented by a variety of performers. Firstly, there were neverthriving jugglers, with a few thin girls in a variety of cover from one piece to full bikinis. But they had no idea of how to dance. Next in-line were a group of what appeared to be African performers, men and women, doing gymastical moves, but with rhythm, as opposed to the bikini girls. Quite a good performance. So I had my free beer, and was ready for another, and was a bit disappointed at the VND60K price. OK, I guess you pay for the international performers, apart from the bikini girls, but isn't that what a cover charge is for? I had a look at the food menu, and almost choked on the free peanuts; if I wanted to buy some salted peanuts it would cost VND180K! Then on came the marching drumming band - quite spectacular with fluro-lit drums. Pity you couldn't hear them over the music. As for the crowd, probably 500 or so, mainly Korean's, aging from toddlers to geriatric. I guess there is not much night life where they come from! But wait, it was audience participation time, something that the Vietnamese love. It was a game of "freeze"; contestants writhing to the music, and then "freezing" when the music stopped. Old men with a single young girl made it to the final. I guess there was a price for everyone. After the third beer, needed to go to the bathroom. Nearly tripped over the power cord to an outdoor air-conditioner, before a worker managed to push it back to its rightful spot. The bathrooms were very ordinary, not very tidy, run-down, and were sandwiched between the staff lockers! So that helped me to decide it was time to go, vowing not to go back in a hurry!
